Fillings Are Better Now Than Ever Before

Welcome back to another edition of our dentistry blog.

Here at Advanced Dental Care of Las Cruces, we support the families of New Mexico in their quest to maintain lifelong oral health.

We offer a wide range of dental solutions in our office on Don Roser Drive, including dental implants, and adult orthodontics.

But we are also big on preventative dentistry and employing early treatment strategies for any issues that are detected during your regular checkup.

Despite being conscientious about what you put into your body, and how well you take care of your teeth, cavities can sneak up on you.

This is never an ideal situation, but truth be told, when decay is caught early enough, our treatment is effective and painless.

We still rely on fillings to do the job, but thankfully fillings are not what they used to be.

No More Scarlet Letters

When decay begins to form in your tooth, a small hole will develop.

You may not even notice it.

But the hole will not go away on its own and it will continue to grow and eat away at your tooth.

The longer the decay is left untreated, the worse the situation becomes.

Eventually tooth decay can reach a point where it is completely out of control and you may need to have the tooth extracted and replaced.

Fillings can help prevent that from happening because they work to fill the hole, strengthening your tooth and protecting it from further decay.

By now we are all familiar with the old school silver dental fillings that either resemble dark spots or big metallic blotches when you open your mouth.

They are impossible to miss, functioning like the scarlet letters of oral hygiene.

But things have changed at Advanced Dental of Las Cruces, and we can now offer a better option for filling in your teeth.

Nearly invisible, mercury-free dental fillings are what we suggest to our patients for a more discreet cavity treatment.

What’s Better About Mercury-Free?

Conventional fillings relied on silver amalgam, which is a paste composed of mercury along with other metals.

Because these fillings can contain up to 50% mercury, there have always been concerns from patients afraid of mercury poisoning or who have allergies to metal.

Not surprisingly, these old school fillings never looked quite natural on your teeth either.

The more modern mercury-free fillings are instead made of a composite resin, glass ionomer or ceramic.

This means that your fillings can actually be matched to your tooth color so as to look like they belong in your mouth.

Moreover, mercury-free fillings bond directly to your tooth structure and don’t require as much enamel removal before application, which makes your teeth stronger and much less vulnerable to breakage now than they would have been with previous methods.
