If you have a been a regular reader of our blog, then you know we are big fans of dental implants. They can do so many things that improve the quality of life for our patients.
With the development of mini implants, those benefits are now available for more people than ever. We’ve seen what mini implants can do at our dentist office in Las Cruces, NM.
Having dental implants or mini implants can be the difference between loose-fitting dentures and what basically amounts to a third set of teeth. With dental implants, your replacements for your missing teeth can be strong, stable, and secure.
You can find out more by visiting Advanced Dental. Dr. Harvey Reiter understands the kind of difference dental implants can make, and he can answer any questions you have about them.

Comparing Life With And Without Dental Implants
Imagine two long-time friends meeting for lunch at a restaurant. One has dental implants to support his dentures. The other does not.
The one with implants laughs easily and does not hesitate when he has something to say. He’s having fun with his friend and the waiter. When it’s time to place his order, he gets whatever he wants because he knows he can eat it.
The other speaks very carefully, not because he has nothing to say, but because he is worried his dentures may come loose. Likewise, he tends to get food he knows he can eat (mashed potatoes, soup) when dining out in public rather than the foods he really wants (fried chicken, steamed carrots, corn on the cob).
Who would you rather be? Do you want to be the person who can speak and eat with confidence that your replacement teeth will stay where you want them to be?
Advanced Dental can help you be that person. It’s why we offer mini implants. We want as many people as possible to enjoy the benefit of dental implants.

What Dental Implants Do
The first modern dental implants were developed in the 1960s as replacements for the roots of missing teeth. Like roots did for your natural teeth, dental implants were used to anchor your teeth replacements in place.
Dr. Reiter knows that losing just one tooth can make a difference in your life. When he had a tooth removed, he was surprised by how if affected his ability to eat. By getting a dental implant as part of his tooth replacement, his smile looks complete again. He can eat comfortably again, too.
Dental implants can provide similar benefits if you need to replace multiple teeth or a whole row of teeth, as in the example of our two friends described above.
When you lose teeth, you no longer have roots to press into your jaw. This is important. Without roots to create pressure on your jawbone, that bone can begin to shrink.
By getting dental implants, you are providing a physical replacement for the root. The implant isn’t just a placeholder. It also serves the same function by pressing into your jawbone when you bite and chew.
This causes the new bone tissue growth needed to maintain your jaw’s size and shape for years to come.
Unfortunately, we know all too well at Advanced Dental what can happen if patients wait too long to get dental implants.
Mini Implants To The Rescue
As great as dental implants are, you need a certain amount of bone in your jaw to hold you implants in place. If your jaw has shrunk too much, then you won’t be able to support full-sized dental implants.
Mini implants have a smaller diameter than standard dental implants. This allows us to place mini implants in the jaws of patients who could not get regular implants.
For these patients, mini implants do two things. First, they give them the opportunity to get a dental crown, a dental bridge, or dentures to replace however many teeth they have lost.
Second, they support the health of their jawbone. The mini implants won’t allow you to replace bone tissue you’ve already lost. However, mini implants can prevent further bone loss in your jaw.
And as we’ve seen, that can make a lifetime of difference for our patients.
