Stages of Gum Disease

Did you know that your teeth are directly affected by the health of your gums? If your gums are not healthy, your teeth will not be healthy. It is important to see your dentist regularly to ensure you are not developing gum disease, as this can be a serious condition. In fact, untreated gum disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, and premature birth.

Stages of Gum Disease

What is periodontal disease? Gum disease starts out as gingivitis, which is identified by swollen, red, bleeding, and inflamed gums. Gingivitis is considered the lesser form of gum disease, and it can be treated fairly easily without surgery or extensive treatments. Once gingivitis has been treated, you will need to follow up with Dr. Reiter to ensure that you do not develop it again. You will also need to maintain proper oral hygiene at home, which will drastically reduce your chances of developing it in the first place.

Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease and can occur if gingivitis is left untreated. You can develop it without even knowing that you even have the disease until your periodontist tells you. Periodontitis is typically identified by loose teeth, a change in your bite, pockets along the gums, and chronic bad breath (halitosis). This condition will need to be treated with more extensive periodontitis treatment procedures than those for gingivitis.

Deep Cleaning and Root Planing

One of the most effective periodontal disease treatment methods for gum disease is a deep cleaning. During a deep cleaning, we will remove excess plaque and tartar from your teeth and under your gumline. The plaque and tartar stuck on your teeth and under your gums is what irritates your gums and causes gingivitis. Our cleaning methods will eliminate the problem and provide you with healthy gums so that you can live a happier, healthier life.

During root planing, Dr. Reiter will reach the roots of your teeth to clean them and smooth them out. When periodontitis is present, you will typically need to undergo root planing and sometimes additional periodontal disease treatment or gum disease treatment.
